We recognise the emotion. You may or may not be shirtless as you stand in front of your closet as a growing sensation of dread settles into your mind. You question yourself, “How the hell do I know which shirts match with which ties, and how do I know which colors go well together?” Before you shout “I can’t even!” into the sky and throw your hands in the air, just show up to work in your pajamas. Breathe deeply; you’re in good hands. We’ve got a few straightforward guidelines to keep you feeling relaxed, looking sharp, and simplifying your morning routine.

How to do a perfect color match

Great color combinations that never will fail

It only takes a little bit of knowledge to understand how to combine colors; it does not require an engineering degree.

Keep it stupid and simple

If you’re unsure about where to start, remember the acronym K.I.S.S. We both concur that, in order to streamline your routine and save time in the morning, it is sometimes best to reduce everything to the bare essentials. That requires wearing a plain, solid-colored shirt and a simple tie to start. A white shirt always matches everything, regardless of the color of the suit or the tie. Additionally, that white shirt looks good whether or not you’re wearing a pattern. Finally, as a general guideline, you should always wear a tie that is darker than your shirt. If not, you run the risk of appearing to be a mob boss or, at the least, a Bond villain.

The primaries

Keep it stupid and simple

Primary colors—red, blue, yellow, green, and for our sartorial needs, white and gray—are the ideal place to start when wanting to add some color to the rotation because they all complement one another and are essentially interchangeable. For instance, red, blue, yellow, green, and gray ties can be matched with white, blue, and gray shirts. Therefore, no matter how you match the primary colors, it will look fantastic if you are focusing on them. The same is true of your suit color; neutral hues like navy, charcoal, gray, and tan mix well with almost all primary color combinations. Every presidential contender always wears some variation of navy, blue, red, and white, and there’s a good reason for that: it looks fantastic.

The monochromatic effect

By combining various tones of the same color, you can create a monochromatic effect. Since they are all shades of the same color, as you have undoubtedly guessed, they go together easily. There’s a reason you see monochrome ensembles on some of the world’s most stylish men and in fashion publications; it’s not only easy to pull off, but it also looks fresh and contemporary. However, always try to preserve a pretty apparent variation in the hues you choose so you don’t wind up looking like a high-fashion mental patient or Kanye off his medication. You may also add minor tie patterns to offer a little bit of visual intrigue.

Pattern combination – done right

Colors do count

Let’s talk about how to make adding some patterns to your rotation less painful now that you’re feeling assured about your color knowledge.

Scale is everything

Keeping the scale, or size, of the patterns under control is essential for pattern matching (puns, bro). It is never a good idea to have two large-scale patterns that are the same size fighting with one another since it will make everything look out of balance and be too much for the eye to handle (not to mention the stomach). When two small-scale patterns are combined, they can work as long as their visual characteristics differ sufficiently. If you want to wear a lovely gingham shirt, for instance, combine it with a tie that has a small or micropattern that stands out but isn’t too overtly different, like a thin stripe or tiny geometric pattern. Alternately, for the perfect outfit, match a vividly patterned foulard print or striped tie with a small-scale check or tattersall shirt. Letting the huge designs speak for themselves will help you maintain a stylish equilibrium.

Colors do count

You obviously can’t completely forget what you learned about combining colours, and the same guidelines should apply to your pattern mixing. Try to maintain patterns in the same family because they will always go together like gin and tonic when they feature similar or complementary hues. There is more risk involved the more contrast and variance you add.

Keep one in a solid state

Keep one in a solid state

Like when assembling large-scale designs, you must be mindful of the number of patterns you are using and take care to avoid stacking them like Rick Ross piling up on wing sauce. When in doubt, mix up the other two of your three items (suit, shirt, and tie) while keeping one of them in a solid state. For instance, it’s better to wear a solid-colored suit when wearing a patterned shirt and tie. Alternatively, a solid-colored shirt will look best when worn with a patterned suit and patterned tie.

Pattern combinations that never fail

  • Small geometric pattern plus large check
  • Gingham with a small floral or geometric pattern
  • Small geometric pattern and pinstripe
  • Stripe and tattersall
  • Large check, geometric, or foulard pattern with tattersall
  • Stripe plus a tiny geometric pattern or floral design pattern
  • Dotted pattern plus a tiny geometric pattern
